On November 13th, 2023, the EALING Local Stakeholder Workshops for the Bulgarian Ports (Port of Varna and Port of Burgas) were conducted.

The Port of Varna stands as the largest port complex in Bulgaria. Operated by “Port of Varna” EAD, its two terminals, Varna East and Varna West, boast a total of 36 berths. The port is an integral part of the extended TEN-T network, annually managing over 8 million tons of bulk cargo and more than 150,000 TEUs. In 2022, the terminals welcomed 484 vessels, with an average berth stay duration of 145 hours or 6.5 days.

Established in 1903, the Port of Burgas routinely hosts various vessel types, including General Cargo ships (47%), Oil/Chemical Tankers (11%), Bulk Carriers (10%), Container Ships (7%), and Oil Products Tankers (4%). This diversity in vessel types positions it as an ideal testing ground for implementing Onshore Power Supply solutions across a range of ship categories.

In both cases, the purpose of the meetings was to present the results of the research conducted within the EALING project for the construction of the necessary infrastructure to supply ships with electricity (Onshore Power Supply – OPS) in the two ports.
